El Quisco, Isla Negra, El Tabo and Cartagena — a string of coastal towns south of Algarrobo
South of Algarrobo, the coast road strings together a handful of small towns worth a day trip: El Quisco, Isla Negra, El Tabo, and Cartagena. Each has its own beaches and a slower pace than the bigger resort towns, making them an easy way to see more of the Central Coast without leaving day-trip range.
The best-known stop is Isla Negra, a small coastal community within El Quisco where poet Pablo Neruda built his favorite of three houses. He lived there from 1939 until his death in 1973; the house, shaped and furnished like a ship and packed with his collections, is now a museum run by the Neruda Foundation. Further south, Cartagena keeps the feel of an old fishing village, with local markets selling crafts and fresh seafood.
