Viña del Mar

Chile's "Garden City" — beaches, gardens, and a legendary summer song festival

Back to Discover Algarrobo

Viña del Mar sits on Chile's central coast immediately north of the port city of Valparaíso, within day-trip range of Algarrobo. Known across Chile as the "Ciudad Jardín" (Garden City) for its parks, tree-lined avenues, and manicured gardens, it has been the country's most fashionable seaside resort since the early 20th century, when wealthy families from Santiago and Valparaíso built summer mansions along its waterfront.

The city's most photographed landmark is the Reloj de Flores, a working clock set into a bed of flowers near the beachfront, planted in 1962 and still a favorite photo stop. A short walk away, the gardens of Quinta Vergara hold the open-air Quinta Vergara Amphitheater, which since the 1960s has hosted the Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar every February — one of Latin America's largest and longest-running music festivals, broadcast across the region. Along the coast, the early-1900s Castillo Wulff sits on the rocks where the Marga Marga estuary meets the sea, and the beachfront promenade of Avenida Perú runs the length of the city's beaches, popular for walking, running, and cycling with ocean views the whole way.

  • ✓Swim or sunbathe at Playa Caleta Abarca, the city's best-known beach
  • ✓Try your luck, or just people-watch, at the historic Casino de Viña del Mar

Gastronomy

Viña del Mar's dining scene ranges from casual seafood spots along Playa Caleta Abarca to more upscale international restaurants near the casino and the city's beachfront hotels, reflecting its long history as Chile's most cosmopolitan seaside resort.
